Project Overview
Quantum Builders was selected by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) to implement comprehensive fire protection systems across their world-class research campus in Thuwal. This project required the highest standards of safety engineering to protect advanced research facilities, laboratories, and residential areas.
Scope of Work
- Installation of addressable fire alarm systems throughout campus buildings
- Advanced smoke detection systems for laboratories and research facilities
- Fire suppression systems including sprinklers and specialized gas suppression
- Emergency lighting and exit signage systems
- Integration with building management systems (BMS)
- Manual call points and alarm notification appliances
- Fire hydrant systems and fire fighting equipment installation
Technical Specifications
The project featured state-of-the-art fire detection technology with intelligent addressable systems capable of pinpointing exact locations of fire incidents. Our team implemented specialized suppression systems for sensitive research laboratories where water-based systems were not suitable, using clean agent gas suppression to protect valuable equipment and research.
All systems were designed with redundancy and reliability in mind, featuring backup power supplies and multiple communication paths to ensure continuous operation. The fire alarm systems were integrated with KAUST's central security and building management systems for comprehensive campus safety monitoring.
Project Challenges & Solutions
The main challenge involved working within an active university campus without disrupting ongoing research activities and academic operations. Our team implemented careful scheduling, working during low-activity periods and in coordination with university administration to minimize impact on campus life while ensuring timely project completion.
Quality Assurance
All installations underwent rigorous testing and commissioning procedures in compliance with Saudi Civil Defense regulations and NFPA standards. The project was certified under ISO 9001:2015 quality management standards and included comprehensive staff training for KAUST facility management teams on system operation and maintenance.
